For the longest time I've liked this project named Touhou published by Team Shanghai Alice, said team consisting entirely of one ZUN, if you've been on the internet long enough you certainly recognize it even if not by name. I find myself fond of the derivative material more often than the games, hence why one of my hobbies became collecting plushies made after the magical girls who shoot flashy patterns of bullets at each other.

To be specific, the soft friends I focus on collecting are named FumoFumo or Fumo (ふも) for short. The name comes from the Japanese ‘フモフモ’ which is used as an onomatopeia for something fluffy or soft to the touch. I have been collecting them since 2019, currently owning nine fumos.

My collection

These are the Touhou characters I own as plushies. I have purchased more fumos as gifts but I'll only list the ones that live with me. For a list of available official Touhou fumos you can click this link which will take you to AmiAmi, the online store where they're sold.

How can I get one?

My answer would've been very different prior to 2022, it used to be a pain to even get your hands on a fumo from second-hand sellers. Thankfully, nowadays you can visit AmiAmi to check for available characters, not just for Touhou, fumos are made for other IP's such as Vocaloid and whatever anime or gacha game is popular at the time. For a complete list you can visit the Gift website (Japanese), the company that manufactures and sells these dolls.

There is an existing site that shows useful tips for buying these plushies (which could be applied to buying overseas goodies in general), you can check it out at fumo.website, it's pretty detailed and frankly saves me the time to write a full-blown guide of my own here that would likely use outdated information.

Keep in mind that collecting original fumos has become a very expensive hobby! Don't feel discouraged if you struggle to acquire your first soft friend; be it your favorite character is out-of-stock or the shipping costs are just out of reach. Patience is the quality you'll exercise the most when it comes to these plushies.
